Preparing for the Tournament

The UNC Asheville Women’s Basketball team won the Big South Tournament on Sunday, Mar. 13. The game against Liberty University went into double overtime, leading to a victory of 64-62.

Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick has been the Women’s Basketball head coach for UNC Asheville for the past four years.

“Excitement. Kind of surreal that we had really done it, and relieved” said Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick, answered when asked about the win.

With two days until the tournament, the buzzer sounded in the vacant stands of Kimmel Arena. The girls began their warm up jogging from one end of the court to the other with every other lap incorporating a drill. Coach Mock Kirkpatrick, along with the assistant coaches, shouted instructions to what kind of exercises her team needed to practice next.

“When I first came in, being a coach,” said Coach Mock Kirkpatrick, “I was looking at it very objectively: what do we have and how can we make this team effective?”

A win like for the lady Bulldogs in the Big South Conference Championship has not been happened since the 2006-07 season, according the university’s athletic website.

“Working with them over time, I learned what we needed to attack the culture” she said, “So by the end of the first year we really dove into that culture and team, and developing chemistry.”

There are two words Coach Mock Kirkpatrick would use to describe her team: family and driven.

Update: As of Mar. 19, the women lost to Kentucky 31-85.
