Asheville, North Carolina…aka: Beer City USA
Home to more than fifteen craft breweries and becoming a destination to craft beer drinkers across the US, Asheville embraces and thrives within its beer savoire faire. Voted Beer City USA via National Beer Examiner for three years running, (this year a tie with Grand Rapids Michigan) Asheville wears her Beer City USA tiara with more than just a bit of swagger.
The Beer City USA festival was a six hour tour of craft breweries set up downtown in Roger McGuire Park. Each brewery traveled to Asheville, set up their tent, and proceeded to both serve great beer and teach about their craft. Highlights included:
- Surly Brewery, who’s beers are rarely consumed outside Minneapolis, MN
- Brooklyn Brewery, where the brewmaster has written one of the key books on craft beer and whose maple porter was excellent
- Catawba Valley Brewing, whose careful selection of beers included an interesting Berliner Weisse.
- Holy City, from Charleston, who brewed a bacon stout that was very drinkable – not the joke you might expect when you hear the words “bacon beer.”
The complete list of brewers is found here. Hats off to them all – there were far too many good beers to descsribe them all!
