Roller Derby Action in Boone

The French Broads team of the Blue Ridge Roller Girls travelled to Boone, NC for the very first home bout of the relatively-new Appalachian Roller Girls.

The venue was the incredibly well-lit (roller derby is a low light operation most of the time) Holmes Convocation Center on the Appalachian State University campus, the same place they play NCAA games and such. Big hall. For a first bout, in summer, in a college town, during a thunderstorm… big crowd, 1500 or so. The potential for them to pack that place for a bout during the school year is huge.

This was a double header, with a “pick-up invitational” game showcasing skaters from all around the southeast. Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia had representation, with the bulk of skaters from our other local team, the Little City Roller Girls from Johnson City, TN.

Black beat white, for the record.

The main attraction was the opening of what promises to be a powerful team in the region, the Appalachian Roller Girls. In the end, the experience of BRRG was too much for them, but the score in roller derby does not always tell the whole tale. This was a game of big hits and fast breaks which indicate a team with more potential than the score shows. Keep an eye on the girls from Boone, this is going to get interesting.
