Over 125 poetry fans helped select Asheville’s first Poetry Slam Team in nearly a decade. Eleven finalists with the highest cumulative score from previous jams were admitted as a field.
Five would leave as the Asheville Poetry Slam Team.
After a wonderful musical start by Alex Williamson (Deb O Naire) and a solid opening reading by the lovely Naomi Fitzgerald, the lineup was chosen by picking one of Griffin’s poetry book’s with a number in it. No, they did not get to keep the books, much to the dismay of several of the poets and Griffin’s relief.
Why does Asheville have a poetry slam team, you ask? Good question. Asheville has a long, proud tradition in the poetry slam world which has not been, well, kept up in recent years. This team aims to return that pride. We should all be proud.
Next month, May 8, is the Mother of All Slams, to be held at the Downtown Masonic Temple. You will not want to miss this one, or your mother will hate you.
