The Asheville Civic Center was home once again to the season opener of the Blue Ridge Roller Girls.
This years opener, a double header, billed as St. Patrick’s Slay, featured the French Broads of BRRG vs Twin City Rollergirls from Champaign/Urbana, IL followed by the BRRG All Stars vs Agusta, GA’s Soul City Sirens.
The French Broads is a new team in the BRRG league. Made up of mostly new skaters with a few familiar faces to those who follow BRRG. Some have appeared with the “A” team before, and a couple are coming back either from injury or taking a break. The French Broads dominated the first half with strong jams from Tigra and crazy hits from Chief Goober and Liquor Possi.
The second half saw Twin City tie twice, and then pull ahead by 10 points. No no avail, as the final score showed them 1 point short in a nail-biting ending.
After a nice break listening to 50-year Flood, who you may recall were the winners of RollerPallozza, the second bout was started with a whistle blown by Asheville’s Mayor, Terry Bellamy.
As close as the first bout was, the second was a runaway from the start. Soul City just could not keep up with grand slam after grand slam by Caslamity Jane, Ashevillain, and Mazel Tov Cocktail. BRRG’s defense was fierce with the brutal hitting of Sugar Magmaulya and Rigor Morticia shutting them down jam after jam.
All in all, a great start to a new year of roller derby in Asheville.
