Two hours before, it was pouring rain at nearly an inch an hour. One hour before, it was snowing huge flakes that looked like they came from a Dr. Who episode.
By parade time it was cold with a wicked north wind which made it feel far colder.
Yet, they came. The stalwarts.
Despite being cold and dreary in downtown Asheville, the rain quit long enough for the Mystic Mountain Krewe to celebrate their version of Mardi Gras in the mountains.
Presented as “Homegrown, Fancy and Free” the parade started down Walnut Street and moved along Lexington Avenue at 3pm building up the fun and energy – throwing beads, dancing and blasting New Orleans music. The crowd followed them around Pritchard Park and ending up at Pack Square to sing-ins, cheers and smartphone photos.
